More Summer Reading Options

If you’re a writer looking for encouragement and help with your writing, you’re in the right place. For my newsletter this month, I offer more book titles that friends and fellow writers recommended.

And more reading..

If you write, you must read good literature in a wide variety of genres. Read in the area you are writing, or plan to write. It will give you a sense of language used in that audience, as well as description and tone.

Valerie Hill: “Just finished Bride of New France, loved it and now I am reading Bitter Roots Tender Shoots The Uncertain fate of Afghanistan women (research) plus a biography about a young woman who grew up in a Romani family in Slovakia and was forced into prostitution by her grandmother and mother.”

Heather Wright: “I’m reading Ellie Griffiths’ latest Ruth Galloway mystery. I highly recommend the series.”

Linda Dawson: “I really liked to read the Outlander series of books by Diana Gabaldon. I think you need to read beyond the first 50 pages to really get into the story. There are about 8 books in the series.”

Barbara Heagy: Ragged Company by Richard Wagamese

Carol Leigh Wehking: “I keep a number of things on the go. Reading The Company …, as well as Jodi Picoult’s The Book of Two Ways. And it turns out that I have 2 manuscripts on the go that are in genres that I don’t even usually read!”

Sandra Wilson: “I read a lot of kid lit to the twins but also in my story time sessions. I have a few research books for projects I am working on — grief, dog language, etc., and I am trying to read books to help me understand the world better. Right now I am reading The Opposite of Hate by Sally Kohn.”

Carolyn (me): “I’ve recently listened to the audio version of The Last Book Store in London, by Madeline Martin. It’s historical fiction based in London, England, over the time of World War II. Incredible story of survival with a little mix of romance.”

As you can see, there are so many choices of books. Good Reads is also great place to find recommendations on books with short reviews. Or go to your local library and ask staff to recommend something based on your reading preferences.

Happy reading. Another few weeks of summer to enjoy. Stay safe.
