Carolyn’s Writing Tips:

If you’re going to write, you have to read. Read the sort of thing you want to write and read widely. Reading offers valuable information on language use and telling stories.

New to writing? Invest in classes from well-known authors who teach. Or an organization that offers workshops and conferences. Some are online too.

Libraries offer rich resources for writers. Search the catalogue, find a book and see how it meets your need. Then purchase the book as a reference tool. Ask for recommendations of other writers.

Carry a notebook and pen with you wherever you go. Ideas are all around you. If an electronic device is more your style, use a note tool to document ideas until you have time to write more.

Make time to write. What time works best for you? Early morning, late at night, on a commuter train? You’ll know.

When you’ve written your first draft, set it aside for days or weeks, then go back and revise.

Find a writer’s critique group. A reputable source here: https://www.janefriedman.com/find-the-right-critique-group/

If you’re writing to publish, seek a reputable publisher or printer. Do your homework if you plan to self-publish. This is serious business. Hire an editor.

If you’re writing for yourself or family, especially stories about others, do your due diligence in research. Ask someone who reads well and widely to review your work. You want to leave behind something worth sharing.
