FineTune Editing came as an inevitable career change in the early 2000s. After studying in the Publishing program at Ryerson, I opened my editing business to assist writers and business owners preparing their work for publication

Whether you write fiction or nonfiction, for children or adults, business, at some point you will need to consider editing of your work before publishing, either through the traditional or self-publishing channels.

By 2021, I have already edited:
  • travel memoirs and life stories
  • children’s books
  • fiction and nonfiction
  • real estate and other business books
  • resumes and cover letters
  • application essays
  • blogs and newsletters

Everything from blogs to books

I help you make your message clear by:

  • cutting through wordiness and jargon
  • correcting errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation and usage
  • ensuring that the message is appropriate to your audience
  • checking the tone of content
  • assisting with story development

“An editor helps you look as professional as you are.”

Children’s Books: I’ve worked on picture books and chapter books for young readers, both fiction and nonfiction.

Memoirs: A memoir can encompass much of a person’s life or just a portion of it. I can help you organize and refine your story.

Travel Stories: One author took me on the climb of Kilimanjaro. Another writer took me to Central and South America on a fascinating journey on foot. Still another wrote about doing mission work in Asia.

Resumes: I can assist by correcting spelling, punctuation, and grammar and making sure your presentation is consistent, correct, and easy to scan by potential hiring companies.

Cover Letters: Whether the hiring company reads the resume or cover letter first, you want both documents to present you and your experience in the best possible light while being honest and sincere.

Application Essays: An application essay is sometimes required for a field of study. Those receiving the essays want to know more about you and how well you express yourself. This is where I can help, by paying attention to use of language, tone, and grammatical issues so the essay is the best it can be.

Blog Posts: Model good language so the reader can take in your information or story without being distracted by errors.

All that I do stems from my passion of helping people to live, work and play with confidence, conviction, clarity and purpose, including my writing. However, Carolyn made a profound contribution to the quality of writing for my soon-to-be-published book: The Roadmap To Success. The contribution is from the perspective that we don’t know what we don’t know.

It was easy for me to write about what it takes to thrive. It is quite another matter to write in a manner that eases the reader into a body of knowledge that may not be their area of prime awareness.

What a blessing to work with Carolyn, allowing her skills and passion for a clear writing voice to take my passion to an arena where the reader can follow fruitfully.

Carolyn brought me gently yet profoundly to a place of “aha” when she recently commented that whether writing a blog, newsletter, article or a book to remember this: you are writing for your reader not for yourself. Working with Carolyn gave me a great feeling of security in the quality of my work because she could look out for my gaps — the places where my passion may be a blind-spot for my reader.

Thank you, Carolyn. The eagle eye of your editing will continue to be a resource to which I place my writing to the test.
